Graston Technique
Graston Technique® for Pain Relief and Improved Mobility
This remarkable procedure allows us to detect and treat areas of “scar tissue” or adhesions in muscles, tendons, and ligaments that can reduce your range of motion and cause pain.
How Scar Tissue Affects Your Body
In the healing process, your body attempts to repair injured areas by creating “scar tissue,” much like the scar that forms on your skin when you have a scrape or cut. Over time, a buildup of this fibrous scar tissue can occur, particularly in frequently used muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This can lead to pain and dysfunction because this replacement tissue lacks the strength and flexibility of healthy tissue. In some cases, it may even mat down and entrap a nerve.
The Graston Technique® Explained
The Graston Technique® uses specialized stainless steel instruments to effectively detect and treat these areas of scar tissue. The instrument glides along your muscles, tendons, or ligaments, applying the right amount of pressure to pinpoint the location of restrictions. When these knots or bands of scar tissue are encountered, both you and the clinician will sense a restriction, almost like a speed bump or a granular feeling.
The instrument helps identify and treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. Stretching exercises are then used to promote re-alignment of the fibers into the normal pattern of healthy tissue.
Benefits of the Graston Technique®
- Effectively detects and treats scar tissue and restrictions
- Provides significant improvement in a short amount of time
- Addresses the root cause of pain by following the kinetic chain
- Decreases overall treatment time
- Fosters faster rehabilitation and recovery
- Reduces the need for anti-inflammatory medication
- Can resolve chronic conditions thought to be permanent
Remember the song and words “…the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone…”? All of your body parts are connected in what is referred to as the kinetic chain. The Graston Technique® instruments allow our clinicians to follow that kinetic chain, effectively uncovering the cause of your problem and treating both the cause and the area of pain or restriction.
What to Expect
Patients usually receive two treatments per week for four to five weeks. Most patients have a positive response within two to three treatments. Most patients are not disabled and can continue to perform their regular functions at home and work.
